We already covered how The Odyssey was shot the first feature ever filmed entirely on IMAX 15-perf/65mm. Now that it’s actually in theaters, the numbers backing that bet up are just as remarkable as the production story.
The Odyssey opened to $124.5 million domestically from 3,919 theaters and $139.6 million internationally across 73 markets, for a worldwide opening weekend of $264.1 million the biggest live-action opening of 2026 and the highest-grossing worldwide opening of Christopher Nolan’s entire career. It also posted the best Monday of 2026, pulling in over $18 million on a single weekday.
The reception matched the numbers. The Odyssey holds a 95% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes the highest of any film Nolan has directed alongside an “A” CinemaScore from exit-polled audiences. Adapted from Homer’s epic with Matt Damon as Odysseus, alongside an ensemble that includes Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong’o, Zendaya, Charlize Theron, Elliot Page, Jon Bernthal, and John Leguizamo, it’s landed as both a commercial and critical result at the same time which doesn’t happen nearly as often as trailers make it seem like it does.
Nolan has never had a genuine box office miss, but he’s also never opened this big worldwide. Oppenheimer, his previous film, built to a massive total gross through a long, word-of-mouth-driven run rather than an explosive opening weekend. The Odyssey did both at once a huge first weekend and reviews strong enough to suggest it’ll hold rather than crater in week two, the same pattern that let Obsession and other 2026 breakouts turn a big opening into a genuinely massive final total. Audience demographics only reinforce that: males made up 56% of ticket buyers, but half the audience fell between 18 and 34, meaning it’s pulling a younger crowd alongside Nolan’s usual base rather than just his existing fans showing up once.
For anyone in production, The Odyssey is a genuinely useful case study: a director and a format everyone assumed had a ceiling — IMAX film, difficult, expensive, loud, short magazine runtimes just posted numbers and reviews that suggest the ceiling was never really there. It’s a good reminder that formats don’t get retired because they stopped working. They get retired because nobody was willing to solve the actual engineering problem in front of them.
