Sony FX5 Delay: What We Actually Know Right Now

Quick update for anyone tracking Sony’s FX5: it still hasn’t shipped. Sony pulled the camera back days before its planned August 21, 2026 release over what the company has only described as a “production-related” or quality-control issue a small first batch reportedly reached EU dealers before Sony pulled inventory back entirely.

What the FX5 Was Supposed To Be

For context on why this delay stings: the FX5 isn’t a minor refresh, it’s Sony’s attempt to push VENICE-level color science into a genuinely compact Cinema Line body. It runs a newly developed, fully stacked 16.6MP sensor with over 15 stops of dynamic range and three separate base ISO settings, adds Open Gate shooting and internal X-OCN RAW recording a first for the FX-series — and was priced at $4,898 body-only, or $5,500 with the new XLR handle unit. Cinematographer Claudio Miranda, ASC, tested it directly against VENICE 2 and described the image as smoother and more organic than the FX3’s. That’s the camera everyone’s actually waiting on.

Where Things Stand

As of Sony Japan’s official statement on September 17, 2026, the company still hasn’t disclosed the actual root cause, and the new release target has slipped to “late October or later.” Launch accessories the XLR handle unit and the detachable OLED viewfinder are delayed right along with the camera body.

What To Do If You Were Counting On One

If you’ve got the FX5 booked for a shoot or built into a rental package for October or November, I’d treat that timeline as soft until you see a firm ship date from an actual retailer, not just a Sony press statement. Rental houses in particular are going to be cautious about confirming inventory until they’ve physically got units in hand, given that Sony has already pulled stock back once. If your project timeline can’t absorb another slip, it’s worth having an FX3 or a7S III as a backup plan rather than betting the shoot on late October holding. We’ll keep this updated as more comes out.
