What sets Broken Dove apart from others is our dedication to the craft of documentary filmmaking. We work hard. It takes hard work to earn people’s trust. That same trust helps us tell authentic stories that are more than just surface level. We tell raw and real stories that help our viewers traverse the globe. Broken Dove Productions also do our best to enjoy the magical ride of making a documentary. We’re happy to create documentaries with people from all around the world. And happy crews make great documentaries. We strive for everyone to enjoy the storytelling process from talent to assistant camera crew members. It takes grit to make this happen with all the factors involved in getting someone’s story to the silver screen. This same grit is a driving theme in all the protagonists we follow. Just like the inspiring athletes and subjects we follow as a team of creatives we change that same insatiable thirst for finding the perfect story. Our passion for character-driven documentaries is inspired by our will to grow, endure, suffer, and remain positive.
In 2020, Director/Producer Danny Simmons founded Broken Dove Productions, a documentary production company. Almost one year later, in December 2020, Gravitas Ventures distributed Simmons’ feature documentary Suffer For Good. For five years, Simmons cultivated multiple storylines by interviewing UFC fighters and professional boxers. Suffer For Good was the winner of nine awards, including Grand Jury Best Feature Documentary, Best Director, Best First-Time Filmmaker, and a nomination for the Audience Award for Best Picture. Broken Dove Productions has found success as a production company with a focus on sports documentaries, cinéma vérité documentaries, music videos, broadcast commercials, and digital content.
Simmons produced and co-directed a short documentary, Ode to Kobe Bryant, with Director Luke Van Patten of Fox Sports. Simmons and Van Patten became close friends in preschool and became college athletes. In 2020, Van Patten and Simmons found solace from Kobe’s tragic death by interviewing Angelenos in front of murals around Los Angeles, Hollywood, Brentwood, Santa Monica, Venice, Playa Vista, Marina Del Rey, the San Fernando Valley, and Encino.
In January 2020, when Broken Dove Productions opened its doors, so many doors closed as a result of the pandemic. And yet, the show went on. Broken Dove Productions filmed Our Revolution, an ethereal social justice piece for Director and Executive Producer Rob Lane.
Broken Dove Productions began production on Faces of Gold’s in 2021. Faces of Gold’s is a documentary series set in Gold’s Gym featuring legendary bodybuilders including Arnold Schwarzenegger, Lou Ferrigno, Jay Cutler, Terry Crews, and Kai Greene. During Faces of Gold’s, Broken Dove Production had the privilege of filming with Cecilia Brækhus, a Norwegian professional boxer who is the undisputed female welterweight champion from 2014 to 2020, and the first woman in any weight class to hold the WBA, WBC, IBF, and WBO titles simultaneously. She is also one of only 11 boxers in history, female or male, to hold all four major world titles simultaneously. Broken Dove Productions served as the production service provider and Danny Simmons served as the executive producer of Faces of Gold’s documentary film produced out of Germany and shot in Los Angeles, New York, Ukraine, and Berlin. As an international studies major, Danny Simmons loves filming documentaries with foreign teams. Broken Dove Productions has an endless Rolodex of fixers living in the United States to help service foreign documentary production teams.
Shortly after Faces of Gold’s, Broken Dove Productions began producing a short documentary following the life of undefeated pro-boxer Callum Walsh as he rose to stardom in the United States. Walsh, a professional boxer, European Gold Medalist, and 6-time Irish champion continues his climb through the ranks as one of the most electric fighters in the United States. With the help of the best boxing trainer of all-time, Freddie Roach, Walsh’s heavy hands caught the eye of UFC’s Dana White. Similar to Callum Walsh and the other protagonists in our documentary production films, our work has received many awards.
